I think the best way to learn about the art business is to experience it. you can read all you want in books, and magazines but I have been in the arts and crafts business for over 20 years and I am still learning.. So my suggestion is sign up to do shows. I would not recommend the high end ones that cost an arm and a leg but the smaller shows there is a magazine called craftmasters and they have the smaller shows listed.

Hi. I am both painter and sculptor, and I am looking to move around and to participate to shows, art fairs. I am actually studying the Market. I dit 3 times atfairs, Afordable art fair of NY, Istanbul in turKey, Fima in Montreal. I did not get rich, but I like to try again. My work is a little bit wild, so I cannot go in exhibit like Howard Allan ones because nobody will like what I do.
This is the reason for me to join your group. To try to understand what I could do with my numerous pieces of art.
I apologize, because I know I write very bad. French is my language.
Salutations to all of you,
Martine

Hi Sherrill,

I know of 2 shows one is called Riverspan, I think it's in the Cincinnati area. The other is Longwood (I think) in Colorado about 40 minutes north of Denver.

Regarding galleries, I think the best way is to organize a group of sculptors yourself and present a prospectus to several different galleries of your "show". You will need to establish firm commitments from the artists that they will not only provide the art to be displayed but will leave it in the show for as long as necessary to fulfill all commitments made to the galleries who choose to exhibit the show. My understanding is that often a gallery owner or committee will sit down a few times a year and go over portfolios and proposals submitted by artists. Galleries love it when all the work of organizing a show is done for them, ie. assembling a group of same talent level artists, creating an idea or theme for a show. So all they need to do is plug the exhibit in to their available schedule dates.

Does anyone know of any all-sculpture shows? Perhaps some galleries that would sponsor a group sculpture show?
I think we need to educate the public about what sculpture represents and how it is relevant in the 21st century, any art historians out there?

Sculpture is a tough sell sometimes, it's not exactly "giftable" unless the giftee has expressed an interest. I find that if a piece doesn't get your viewer viscerally, they're usually not interested.

I agree with Mark about Howard Alan shows, I have never done any and will not ever. I feel there are so many shows to select from I can't imagine ever being desperate enough to put up with Howard Alan and his wife and their bs.
