Hi Maureen - Happy to see another Wrapper.  I started out beading and fell in love with wire.  I am now incorporating resin in my art and creating my own cabs and cameos.  I have also wanted to dabble in PMC but don't have the funds to buy a kiln to do it properly.  Enjoy and glad to have you here

Hi all I fairly new to the art business thing but not to art. I make jewelry using wire wrapping and am learning something new every day. I would like to one day learn to work pmc. I have always been artsy/craftsy. I have been envolved with oil painting, pastel chalk drawing, photography and so on. Since I have little ones, wire jewelry seemed to be best  and safest art form for me at this time in my life. I got hooked on it and decided to try to make some money to help finance my art and make a little extra in the future.

Hi Carol. I am right there with ya.  I dabble in all types of jewelry and haven't settled in one arena and really don't plan to.  I started out beading and then went into wire wrapping and now playing with resins and clay. I have found that having a broad array of items has helped my sales at the shows as what appeals to one won't appeal to the next. - So my advice is to not worry about it and just go with the flow. For me this keeps the art of jewelry making inspiring and fresh.  I too work 40 hours a week at a day job that has to pay the bills and coming home to my "woman cave" is relaxation to let the mind and spirit go wild with what ever medium strikes my fancy that certain evening.

Hang in there.

Hi Carol and welcome aboard :)   I think we all struggle a bit to find our niche - perhaps where your passion lies the most?

Hi.  I'm new to Art Fair Insiders and just discovered this group, so I thought I would introduce myself.  I design and make jewelry using wire, pearls and shells, gemstones, and fiber.  I love to try new techniques, which creates a problem since I'm still struggling with who I am as an artist.  My concern is that I don't yet have a "brand", although I'm working toward it.  Currently, my "signature" is wire necklaces I call bird's nests, but my inventory also contains Viking knit, Kumihimo, wire wrapping, bead weaving, as well as strung gemstones.  I also work full time as a software technical analyst.  The work is demanding and rewarding, but I find it is getting the way of designing and making jewelry!  It is challenging to work 40 hours a week, squeeze in shows on the weekends, then try to find time to fill custom orders and create new inventory.  I'm a member of a local craft club that has monthly shows and a member of the Canaveral Gem & Mineral Society.  I can't wait to dig into the information available on this website and hope to be able to contribute.  I share the same concern I've read so far...what to do about the price of metals?

I agree with Cyreathia, I am creating more mixed metals pieces for the lower price points and then pricing my sterling pieces based on the current silver costs.  The show season is just beginning for me so we will see what happens - I feel that those who have the disposable income and like silver will still buy.  Many younger customers love the mixed metals that I can sell less expensively.

I have started using more copper and taking my jewelry to a metaphysical aspect as well.  I will also use color coated copper and sell it for a cheaper price, and also let my customers know that it can be made using the precious metals taking special orders.  This is working well for me at this point as I only am able to focus on my jewelry part-time and only do a few local shows a year.  Most of the folks in this area do not have extra expendable income to spend on the higher prices of the precious metals.

Another thing I do is to purchase (ebay) the cheaper prices rings that say sterling and then take the stones out to be repurposed in other designs and send the ring forms in for credit on wire.

Greetings, all!

Two questions... 1.) Can anyone tell me how this group differs from the "Jewelry Genies" group here (just curious what the delineation was, if any...) and B.) how in the heck are we handling the rising metals market?!?  Silver is almost $40/oz now, so how have you changed your pricing, changed your designs, educated your followers/customers/market, etc.?  Every time I get the update on the metals pricing, I'm almost forced weeping into a fetal position.  It ain't pretty!  So, just curious how everyone else is weathering this with their own business!  Thanks!

Hi all!

Just discovered this group!  I design  and create jewelry, using metals, gemstones, pearls and crystals. Wire work and beading with a little silver-smithing. I am located in Southern Maine, and am eagerly awaiting Spring!

Hi There Beautiful Cassandra! It's been ages (well, since the Ohio shows at Thanksgiving).....I keep meaning to email, but, life and show prep keep getting in the way. Got a question, when you apply in both categories, do they list you in both categories in the program? Do you have an option? That would be cool to be listed twice at the same show. Better potential for customers to check your work out.

It would be great if the promoters, when they walk the aisles, if they see someone having 'an extra category' in their booth, then charge them the extra jury fee right there on the spot. And, if the exhibitor doesn't want to pay that, then watch them put those items away. Is that too mean? I know that that is a lot of extra work for the promoter, but it sure would garner extra points in all the other artists' minds (and they way that they would then evaluate the show).
