Call for Artists, Making Money at Juried Art Fairs, Craft Shows and Festivals
I hope you have some good plans for this weekend. I know if I was in Florida where I would be. But since I'm in southern Michigan I'm going to make the best use of it I can. I'll be in Columbus, OH, attending the Art Studio Clearance Sale at the Ohio State Fairgrounds, sponsored by the Ohio Designer Craftmen. Will any of you be there?
Any suggestions for a hotel/motel?

It has been a bit stressful around here lately mostly due to a mildly jealous mistress, a leaking gutter, an upcoming jury duty (I told them I preferred all felons be hung for a month in the town square as a warning - and I was thrilled to see the defense insisted on having me on the jury!), and an incorrect carpet order.
Therefore I am treating the Mrs. (aka "Number One") to a fun-packed evening at the North Carolina Museum of Art where we will be thrilled to hear the views of a museum docent on "Cabinets of Curiosities: Exploring the Dutch Kunstkamer" - I am mostly interested in if they actually get away with using found objects in those cabinets without anyone raising hell about it.
We will then catch a late flight and stay at the Ramada in Fishkill, NY on Friday and Saturday before hopefully flying back on the red eye on Sunday night - which shouldn't be too much of a problem since one or both of us will be pretty cranked up if all goes as it should and the TSA is hopefully pre-occupied with something like a 92 year-old terrorist that refuses to strip for them.
Saturday night we will have an early dinner at Il Barilotto in Fishkill (one of the waiters there is an absolute riot) before heading over to catch "NYC's Mission: Improv-able" at the Railroad Playhouse over in Newburgh. We'll head back to Fishkill for shots of Goldschlager and "Sanford and Son" re-runs afterward with the waiter from Il Barilotto and one of the checkout ladies from the Shopright.
Sunday morning we'll enjoy Bloody Mary's after Mass at one of the strip bars in East Fishkill as I write my views of what I think of Zapp vis-a-vis expectations of show directors and artists on the Android tablet while playing Angry Birds and flipping dollar bills on the stage - the "Sunday Brunch Shift" is always the most interesting at any strip bar - no doubt about it.
Other than that, nothing much - it's just a January weekend.

Permalink Reply by geri a. wegner on January 26, 2012 at 6:51pm Wow, my possibly going to the Boca Art Museum show pales in comparison to the hi-jinks of Munks.
Permalink Reply by Connie Mettler on January 26, 2012 at 8:52pm I wish I was joining you, Geri. I always loved the setting of that show, one of the best. Whoops, I misread, thought you said the Lowe Art Museum. You can have Boca.

I'm willing the snow to stay away for another 3 days so I can finish firing pots and then get out of town. After I leave, it can show 8 inches per day and have below 0 temps for the whole month of February because I won't be there.

Permalink Reply by geri a. wegner on January 26, 2012 at 9:46pm Hmm,I really like the setting of the Boca Museum Art Festival. There is plenty of close parking, a big esplanade down the middle of the streets with benches and fountains and the booths are laid out in a fairly orderly fashion so you don't miss anyone. There are a bunch of restaurants there too. The buildings are pretty also.
Lowe is not as orderly as far as seeing all the artists although they are trying to organize it so the food and children's areas are away from the rest. It is a very pretty setting, even prettier when there are no booths at all there. (went to the U book store last week)
Last year, art was superior at Boca too.
Different strokes........

Permalink Reply by Jim Parker on January 26, 2012 at 9:55pm I was supposed to be at Boca, but I had to cancel. Recovery from a minor surgery, and thought that I'd need another week to get ready for the Florida trek because of it. I was right. I'm not ready. But I wish all of you Boca Museum Show arteests well. Have a good time. It is a lovely venue, and usually nice weather. Except last year, of course. Was it last year with the big winds? Yeah. I think it was. Anyway I wasn't there last year either.
Munks, have a great time at the strip joint. Barry, we will see ya at Ft. Myers. Everyone, have a great weekend.
Permalink Reply by Stephanie A. Bailey on January 27, 2012 at 8:39am We will be at the Key West Craft Show. It was a great show last year with lots of traffic. We hope to be fortunate enough to have a repeat. Will there be any one else at the southernmost show this weekend??
Permalink Reply by Connie Mettler on January 27, 2012 at 8:46am Ahh... Key West - that's the place to be, much better than Fishkill.
You are right, Geri, about Boca -- and the quality of the work is usually top-notch and the layout much more navigable.
