Call for Artists, Making Money at Juried Art Fairs, Craft Shows and Festivals

Would (or should) you use the same image that helped you get accepted into a show the previous year? Assuming that image fits the time parameters requested by that show, and it fits cohesively into your current body of work. What do you think?

Time parameters don't mean much. Every time I see awards being given, it's always to work created before the time cut off of images allowed to be displayed.

But to answer your question, supposedly the jurors change year to year and they won't know you submitted the same images for the previous year's application. I've posted this before. Some artists have sent the same jury images since the early 1980's and some keep the same presentation and just upgrade an individual image if it can replace an existing jury image to improve their presentation.

Thanks, Larry. I did look, but couldn't find a discussion about this same image topic. I've read several of your interviews and discussions on your web page. What a great asset you are!

You surely can. The jurors probably won't be the same, but don't neglect to always try to keep these images fresh with new work represented.

We always felt it was important to have new jury slides each year, to continually push to have new and better work, not for the jury necessarily but for the satisfaction of the growth it represented.
While the jury may change from year to year, as the director and person responsible for marketing, I recognize the same photos from year to year because once I've used one for publicity purposes, it will never be used again. When artists submit the same photos every year, it cuts down on the number of good images available for advertising and marketing the show. For a show with a very high returning artist percentage, this can become a problem. Artists who complain about not having their work featured in the publicity are generally those who send the same four images year after year.

As an artist, I like to include images of my new work, something the jury has never seen before. It increases my chances of having my work chosen for publicity, and it also gives me a sense of satisfaction to show something new and different every year. Now that digital images are accepted it's not nearly as expensive as it used to be to have new images available.
