Taking Credit Debit

Hey Yall,

I am just getting back into doing shows and need advice on Credit/Debit..Are the knuckle busters better for fees than the new swipe phone deal?...

I had a small art gallery up until last year... when I closed they charged me..(hold on to your eyebrows they are going to hit your hairline as you look at the screen!) They zapped out of the account $782 the day I closed due to canceling the 8 year contract that I didn't see in the fine print...ok you can lower your eyebrows.

What is the best bang for your buck taking cards?..I am scared to death but know you have to have them to do shows and be professional.

Thanks

Heather

  • I use Square about 90% of the time and do so on an iPad. The signature box is quite large and works well with a stylus. I require an ID for ALL card transactions and I write the DL# in the signature box before they sign. I have had two chargebacks but have won both.

  • The email receipts from Square are quite nice.  It includes a map with a push pin of where the item was bought instead of where the seller is located and if you use an IPad (not sure about tablet) and you upload pictures of your items it includes a picture of what was bought.  It's hard for someone to not remember buying something with that kind of receipt.

  • My first time using Square. Testing using some small transactions.  I notice my Square dashboard doesn't capture the card members name on the transaction.  Do u separately write up a receipt with the persons name on it so you have it in your files or for future reference.  I guess what I'm asking, what is your workflow when using a Square CC swipe thing for a purchase.  I have loaded my products, prices, etc... All seems to work fine on my tests.  But not getting a customer name automatically with the swipe surprised me.

    • You need to write the customer's name and email address down separately.  The way Square gets around the compliance rules is that you get no information on the transaction.

  • I use Square and absolutely love it!

  • Square.

  • Heather, there have been long discussions on the site about giving discounts for cash and other. I take checks but get drivers license and phone numbers. Address should be on check. Some nut at Crested Butte several years ago wanted to use a counter check to buy a saddle. Told him to get cash if his checks hadn't been printed yet.
  • Aprivapay, my swipe service and First Bank here in CO accept entry of manually written card date when entered manually in the system. I do not have to have the card present on other sales too. You do need to know another piece of information like the CVC or billing Zip code to process. Never had a charge back from my guys. I still plan to carry my KBuster as thunderstorms in mountains knock out signals as does heavy rain, hail and snow.
    • Thank you All! There is this crazy fear of handing someone a package wrapped up and looking at them and saying to yourself, "Could I bite your credit card to see if it is ok?" They did this with gold years ago..ha

Does anyone give a discount for cash? Does anyone take checks or cards only?

I with twisted fingers have never had anyone give me bad tender..and have broken big pieces of $1600 into 3 payments..I know, "Are you crazy?" she ended up buying 4 more pieces over then next year. I won't be bringing large pieces to a show this year...the economy won't support it at this time.

      Thanks Yall
