Good afternoon everyone.  Dh and I are in search of a new show or two to try in either this year or next year to replace one that we are doing.  I have a question about Red River Revel in Shreveport, LA.  Specifically it's a question about submitting under the Miscellaneous category.

I am wondering if anyone here knows if chalk painted home decor and furniture is permissible under the 'Miscellaneous' category at RRR.  I chalk paint small pieces of home decor such as candlestick, bowls, vases, etc.  I also paint furniture.  This is different than chalkboard paint.  It is a decorative paint that is finished & sealed with either a liquid or paste wax.

I looked at the website for the category descriptions.  Nothing, as in NO description, was noted under Miscellaneous.  As we discussed recently about application fees, I hate to waste a fee on a show if what I do will not be accepted in the first place.

The website is https://redriverrevel.com/

If you have information about whether small home decor and/or furniture is an admissible entry in this category, I would love to know!  If you personally know someone who works the show that I can call, I am happy to place the call.  I am not trying to seek a favor from the jury or promoter.  I just want to know if an application on my part is a waste of time.

Thanks for any help.

  • I saw that one come up on my radar, but I had to pass. If you do it let us know!

    • Joel,

At this point I am not doing it, not even applying.  I take home decor and furniture that is in need of upcycling and paint it, distress it, etc.  I look for classic, usually traditional, shapes in furniture and decor and chalk paint it, distress, wax, etc. with products from The Plaster Paint Co.  RRR requires everything be handmade from scratch.  I am not in a position to make all my pieces from scratch, nor is dh.  I am not ragging them, by any means, for their requirement.  It just makes it hard for people like me to get into what appears to be an excellent show.

Possibly I could apply with my tumbled travertine coasters by at their price point, it would take selling a TON of them to make it work.

  • I found a phone number, called and asked specifically about painted furniture & decor.  What I found out is this.  Each item must be hand made from scratch.  So, since I don't make it, even though I do alter pieces, it none of it is eligible.

I am leaving this up (unless Connie wants to take it down) so that others know it has to be all hand made.
