Call for Artists, Making Money at Juried Art Fairs, Craft Shows and Festivals
Open Juries this week
Columbus Arts Festival open jury February 4-5
Broad Ripple (Indianapolis) open jury Wednesday February 8
It's well worth the effort to attend one to see what your and your
competition's images look like. And you don't need to apply to attend
an open jury. Please notify me if you know of any other open juries.

Permalink Reply by Robert M. Wallis on February 10, 2012 at 10:50pm Good set of lines for examples. I felt like I didn't dot all the i's and cross all the t's, and it came back to bite me. I still don't know what they really look for. I had an impulse to pull the cell phone and flip it on video record and lean it back against the chair. Then when the scores came out I could figure who got in with what ;-) I think I may change my name or use the studio name in the future, I was second from last on an alphabetized list. After 73 entries, they have to be burning out at the end and scores have to be taking a bit of a hit.
Ah well, I've got another entry to get filled out tonight. Onwards!

Permalink Reply by Larry Berman on February 10, 2012 at 11:04pm If I understand what you've said, they ordered the images alphabetically by artist last name per medium. That's not fair because you'll always be close to the end in your category applying to that show and I would always be close to the beginning.
I think the only fair way is ordering by date and time of application submission. That's the only way we have some control over when our images get seen.

Permalink Reply by Robert M. Wallis on February 10, 2012 at 11:18pm It would explain a few things on some shows. There was a time, and a couple of shows I still do this, I would enter twice with completely different bodies of work using studio name (Eclectic Images) for one and my regular name for the other. I would get in with one and not the other, and once or twice get in with both.
Given the level of competition in landscape, I see that as a genre I might as well back out of. B&W has more of a resurgence than I thought, although a few years ago I started hearing that the judges were crazy for it again. I'm giving serious thought to hitting the cyanotypes, van Dyke brown prints (Kallitypes), and gum bichromate prints again after a long, long time away from them. I saw absolutely no one doing those in the entries, and neither have I seen those for years at the shows. They are labor intensive, which is an understatement.
Another area I had experimented with several years back was incorporating verse and text with my images, where the words were mine. Does that still remain classified as photography or does it become mixed media? I was using brush and ink to do the lettering. The presentation was a dyptich or a large single framed piece.
Permalink Reply by Michelle Wermuth on February 10, 2012 at 11:18pm If they did it alphabetically I would have been after you! Dead last. Nice. That sucks. I think a random shuffle would have been more fair. We were screwed from the get go. It will be interesting to see What did get in. I am guessing you did not get in either.
Permalink Reply by Robert M. Wallis on February 10, 2012 at 11:21pm I didn't get in. I seem to be jinxed with BRAF anyway ;-)
What were your pieces? There was only one person after me, I don't remember exactly what was submitted so a description might jog these old brain cells.

Permalink Reply by Robert M. Wallis on February 10, 2012 at 11:39pm The shots after mine were flowers, so I'm fairly positive those were yours.
Permalink Reply by Michelle Wermuth on February 10, 2012 at 11:41pm Great. Dead last:) Gotta love being juried alphabetically. If I had known that I probably would not have even tried! If there were lots of flowers before mine, it would not have mattered how good mine were. It probably would not have even helped had I send my macros. Oh well. Live and learn
Permalink Reply by andrea bernstein on February 16, 2012 at 2:04pm Stunning Michelle! Their loss! Sorry, I am at the top of the alphabet-I didn't realize that my name may serve me well in jurying although I did plan that when choosing a name for my company-AB Glass Jewelry.
Permalink Reply by Michelle Wermuth on February 16, 2012 at 2:15pm Thanks Andrea. I had no idea my last name could be a hinderance either. Ah well. Live and learn

Permalink Reply by Larry Berman on February 10, 2012 at 11:34pm I think you might remember mine. It was my color infrared.
