Hi all, I'm getting ready to apply to the Inman Park Arts Festival. I believe my work falls within mixed media 2D. It incorporates vintage items/boxes, elements found in nature and digital collages/montages. Usually everything is sealed in epoxy resin. Pieces are either original or part of very limited editions of 5. The thing I am unsure of is the digital element. Does that mean I should also consider the digital category? Any help/advice would be welcome. Please see work attached - I will be taking better photography.

Thanks,

Cheryl

  • Thanks for the replies. I agree with 2D. Most are designed to hang from walls. I guess I could still include a couple that are meant to go on shelves?

  • I would have to say it's MM 2D, as it's designed to hang on the wall. The couple inches of thickness aren't really 3-D, just framing and presentation layers. my2c

    • So there you go! Right, Jim. That was the element that was not coming through in my brain. Exactly. My 4c

  • This is really very interesting work, Cheryl. I'm with Alison, definitely Mixed Media. If you have a choice of MM 2D or MM 3D it gets a little stickier and I'd say it is up to you. Which do you consider it?

(Also good job adding the photos to the discussion. Here's another tip: If you "edit" the discussion - see the little pencil at the bottom - and hover over the images you'll see that at the bottom you have a choice to either edit or delete. Click on delete and you can then choose how large you want them to be. Play with that and you've learned a new trick.)

    • Thanks Connie! I agree that they fall somewhere in the middle of MM 2D or 3D. My greatest influence has been from the late Joseph Cornell. He was considered an assemblage artist even though some of his pieces could hang from walls. I thought that in the strictest sense, 3D meant in needed to stand on it's own. If anyone has any clarification on this it would be appreciated!

Thanks also for the resizing tip!

  • Mixed media.

  • I have a few that are assemblage pieces using vintage boxes. The rest are on cradled wood panels. I've built wood frames for some of these. The others are 1.5"-2.5" deep with wrapped or painted sides. The Bear piece isn't quite done yet. It will be cutout from the wood panel using a jigsaw. Box frame used in back for relief.

I believe the Inman Park Festival is a little more relaxed in what it accepts. I know going forward I will need to narrow down the styles of execution for a more cohesive look.

  • Looks like mixed media to me -- are there images in frames? Don't I see objects in some of these frames? Are there 2D pieces and also 3D?
