I applied thinking it was Riverwalk, lo and behold I got in.

Normally a  secondarary show isn't as good as the higher ranked show,so I'm not sure what to do with it.  My work is higher end paintings, contemporary landscape to abstract.

My lowest price point is $475.   I did Alexandria last year for the first time and it was just ok,so it may be an option for me this year,on this weekend, maybe?

Any info would be helpful. I know nothing.

Thanks,

Derek

  • Derek, trying to reach you one more time with the info. I sent you a PM. You must not have notifications turned on.

  • Derek, I tried to send you a private message with regard to several shows. But apparently you have to accept a friend request to receive a message.

  • I did the show about 3-4 years ago. It was hotter than blazes as we were in direct sunlight out of reach of tree shade. Five of us, 2 on my side and 3 behind us, tied our rear side tarps together to make a large tent behind us to keep the sun off. One guy on my side, other side to my neighbor declined and the guy looked like he stepped out of the jungle he was sweating so bad, and we were concerned he might have heat stroke if he didn't stay hydrated. The corner we were in was one of the most uncomfortable spots I've been in. I had extra 12V RV fans and was running fans to three other artists to keep everybody halfway cool. As mentioned above, sales were terrible and attendance was minimal.

The Naperville Women's Club puts it on, and while they are very nice people and have a great awards dinner, they can't control the weather. It was also telling that virtually everyone in our corner of the show was there for the first time. Sales all around us were miserable with seasoned artists being skunked or not making booth fee. No one out of about 15 artists I checked with said they would return. Again, the weather was beastly hot that year and no one came out. I would probably try it again if I was local. I'm not, so I won't.

    • Thanks, I have heard enough to know that I won't do it.  You probably don't remember me.  We were close to each other at the Easton Art Fair, say 5 years agos.  It was upper 90's and the streets were empty.  There were goose eggs everywhere.

      • IIRC, you were sort of up toward the middle of the street on the opposite side from me. That one had to be the worst show I did with dangerous heat levels and a few disinterested looky-loos. I still recall showing up Sunday morning and seeing that seven or eight artists had pulled out during the night and that morning.

  • How far of a drive is it for you? This is not a destination show. I think of 2D art as being in a hit or miss situation with any smaller show, as one or 2 good sales can skew the results. A 2D friend has had a great show here, and also terrible sales. It's a wealthy neighborhood, but if it is hot (like 90 degrees, and it often is), no one will come. Naperville folks have lots of other things they can do on a July weekend and stay cool. The park has shady spots, but also ones in full blazing sun, and it is hard to get one of the shady spots.

    Alexandria where? What state?

    • Thanks!  That is what I was thinking. Piggy back shows often don't get the high end buyers or at least not as many of them.  I'm 6-ish hours, Louisville area.   Alexandria,Va/DC it's 12 hours for me.  6 sales can be a really good or awesome show for me, but I could also zero out with the wrong crowd. I don't do well with an older audience
