I am currently trying to write an Artist statement for Juried Art Services and Zapplications. Right now I don't see in Zapp where to write it so perhaps I just have to include it on every application. But for JAS the artist statement is suppose to be 85 words long.

I have read previous posts that go back and forth about what is an artist statement vs a materials and technique statement. I understand in other formats such as galleries and my website I will choose to write something more creative but for the focus of this discussion I just want the facts for what is expected from these jury application systems.

1. I want to know what JAS expects and what ZAPP expects.

JAS says 85 words...what do I include in that 85 words?

If there is a place to write my statement for ZAPP does anyone know what they want included in their Artist Statement?

  • what words would you cut for the 85 count JAS, JAS  says 85 characters limit

what I have is this, with spaces it is 117 words..

Intricately carved ceramic paper clay sculptures of feminine creatures, finished to create an illustrated appearance.

    • I can shorten that statement for you but JAS doesn't have an 85 character limit. I just read their tutorial and there is a 973 character limit.

      • I'm so sorry Larry I figured out what was wrong. The word limit next to my box said character limit 85 characters but that was because my old statement was being counted and that is what was left. Ugh, Time to start over.

        • I see 855 characters limit.

          • But here's a 77 character statement that doesn't loose anything from your original statement:

carved clay paper sculptures of feminine creatures to create illustrated look

            • Thanks Larry, that does work well.

  • I noticed before in past discussions that you said that this statement is really to focus on the materials and technique.

    • Right. You don't want to throw flowery descriptive words at them. Be to the point and not say anything that isn't necessary for them to understand what you're creating.

      • Okay I will work on it but to just highlight your other statement about the images I have gone through all of your instructions on photos and have applied what I understood. I have my images that I plan to submit on my AFI Page. If you have the opporunity I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you Larry

  • Just because they say how long it can be doesn't mean it has to be. For ZAPP, I have a 100 and 200 character statement. I use the 200 character statement for JAS shows.

Too many characters or words and it slows the jurors down and them might not read it. For JAS, which I've always thought to be 500 characters, the statement appears within the images under the center top row image.

Now if you were to ask why ZAPP and JAS have different image formats, I can answer that also.
