SEE THIS NEWS STORY ABOUT HAL GOULD

I first learned of Mr. Gould and Camera Obscura Gallery in Denver during 1997, but didn't visit with him in his gallery until 2005. I'm sorry I didn't get there sooner, plain and simple. Maybe if I'd met him in 1992 or thereabouts when my life revolved around photography, I would have gotten to really know him.

But for one brief half hour in June, he led me through the nooks and crannies of the two story house on Bannock Street, doing what he must have done best: he promoted photography to me in every way it could be possible. He represented every aspect of it in every way it could be expressed. And he was a model of endurance for anyone pursuing any art career.

When he closed his gallery in 2011, he lamented about the difficulties of selling photography in a Denver Post article. SEE THAT ARTICLE HERE

R.I.P., Hal Gould. February 20, 1920 (Clark, Wyoming) to June 25, 2015 (Denver, CO.)

EDIT: I just learned there'll be a documentary feature film about his life. SEE THIS WEBSITE

  • Thanks for this, Barrie. I think it is important to have this information about major figures outside of our art fair niche. The perspective is very helpful.

How wonderful that you got to spend some time with him ...
