Fence Posts and Sand as Weights?

Hi y'all!

So I'm doing my first big road trip next month -- heading to Florida from New York for three shows -- and I'd like to save a bit on weight in the vehicle for the drive.

I'm thinking about getting some hollow vinyl fence posts to use as weights -- when I get down to FL I'll buy some sand and fill the posts; dump out the sand for the drive home. I like the square ones, but I'm not sure they'll be good with sand.

Has anybody used these things as weights?  Are they sturdy?  Are the caps secure enough to use for sand and can they be opened and closed to fill/empty?

Thanks!

  • Vinyl fence posts walls are not nearly as thick as the PVC pipe. if you want to fill and empty your weights you can get the 4" pvc and glue on a end cap hub that has the threaded open insert for the removable clean out plug. This would allow you to fasten a eye bolt in the clean out plug for hanging or fastening it to the tent legs.

    • I like the idea of the square posts, but this would probably be more secure. Thanks for the links. How would you recommend I secure the eye bolt to the plug? Just drilling and gorilla glue doesn't seem all that secure.  Thanks!

      • I've used a large 1/2" diameter eye bolt with large flat washers on the inside of the clean out plug and then snugged the washers to the pvc with locknuts. Solid.

The only issue with the square post is not having a way to securely fasten the tops without pvc glue if you plan to fill and empty them.
