Call for Artists, Making Money at Juried Art Fairs, Craft Shows and Festivals
EntryThingy and ZAPP Images
Most shows using EntryThingy are asking for the ZAPP 1920 pixel square format.
You can't take your images from ZAPP for EntryThingy. Once your images have been uploaded to ZAPP, you only have access to 700 pixel square enlarged images, too small for EntryThingy and also too small to be edited and then uploaded again to ZAPP.
You must go back to the ZAPP images before they were uploaded. For years I've been warning artists that they needed their ZAPP images on CD from their photographer and hopefully they have them now that they are needed for non ZAPP use.
The reason for this post is because every day I'm getting calls or emails from artists who are trying to upload images that are too small for EntryThingy and don't know why because they took them from their ZAPP profile.

Permalink Reply by Warren Townsend on January 28, 2012 at 2:23pm Larry, yeah I ran into the problem of the Zapps being the 700. I had a hard drive failure and tried to use the Zapps, and does not work. The old saying of backing up and backing up is a must.

Permalink Reply by Larry Berman on January 28, 2012 at 2:28pm Did you know that you can have ZAPP send you a CD of all your ZAPP images. I think they charge a $25 fee and require a faxed drivers license for identification.

Permalink Reply by Michael J. Magee Photography on January 29, 2012 at 10:51pm I've used Entry Thingy for two shows in Illinois and one in Green Bay this August. Maybe it's a Midwest thing? :-)
Permalink Reply by Lois Songer on January 30, 2012 at 12:47pm I'm looking at EntryThingy for our 2013 shows and will probably use it.
Thanks Larry for this reminder and info!

Permalink Reply by Connie Mettler on January 30, 2012 at 1:50pm Lois, I have used EntryThingy.com for several shows I've worked on, from the show organizer's point of view it is really easy to upload the info to your site and Chris Ritke, the developer, is very accessible. The fees are amazingly reasonable for you also.
It isn't necessarily a Midwest thing. Chris is a software engineer who developed this system for galleries and online competitions then adapted it for art fair use.
Permalink Reply by Joan Tweedell on February 28, 2012 at 11:49am Lois, I set the Leeper Park art fair up with Entrythingy last year and we were happy with it. I am no computer expert (I have about a squinch more facility with computers than anybody else on the committee, which isn't much) and it took me a while to get it all set, with a LOT of help and handholding from Chris Rilke, but it was very easy for the committee and jurors to work. Some artists who were not familiar with any of the online processes needed help, and a few simply threw up their hands and sent in CDs. Let's hope that this year will be better!
Permalink Reply by Ruth Finkenbiner on January 30, 2012 at 2:30pm I've seen this used for a few West Coast shows, and while I like it, one pet peeve was the fact that I had to upload my images with different naming conventions. For example one show wanted all images renamed to artist first name, last name and then numbered. So, we couldn't just re-use the images from other submissions, we had to rename, upload and then add descriptions, prices, etc. Not quite as easy as ZAPP.
Permalink Reply by Connie Mettler on January 30, 2012 at 2:52pm But once you have done that one time, Ruth, will you not have that information for the next time, all uniform like your ZAPP account?
Permalink Reply by Ruth Finkenbiner on January 30, 2012 at 5:31pm Connie - It's not a huge deal, but I did 2-3 EntryThingy apps in one week, had 7 images and had to re-upload 5 of them due to a specific shows naming convention. There's no way to rename the file once you've uploaded it or at least no way that I found. Still, I would rather use that tool than have to put images on a CD or mail photos and a paper application to a show.

Permalink Reply by Larry Berman on January 30, 2012 at 2:53pm And there is no image bank. You can only add images if you start an application, or log into an existing application.
Maybe Chris should think about letting artists create an image bank they can draw from.

Permalink Reply by Chris Ritke on January 30, 2012 at 3:19pm Larry - Yes, that's something to think about - although artists can reuse images they've uploaded to other calls - so there's no need to upload the same images over and over.
