Buying a second chip reader

Since we are talking about the square in another thread, I wondered- did everyone get a second chip reader for a backup?

I plan to. Has anyone been able to get one for free?

My first chip reader cost $49 but I was reimbursed by having my fees deducted.

Thank you,

Judy

  • You really only need one when you have the Square Contactless Chip Reader. If you mount it in the dock ($29) and connect that to a small battery such as a mophie http://www.mophie.com/ .  This will be sufficient. The charger keeps it going all day. It looks very professional and you will always know where your charger is since it will stay in place on your table or desk. This set up eliminates one or more problems to solve when doing shows. Don't miss a sale because you are fiddling with your dead reader.

    • Agree it's more important to have a rechargeable battery pack to keep your phone or iPad charged......and it will also charge the chip reader if needed. We never leave home with our device by Halo! Actually hubby has one too :)
      • We love our portably battery pack!

  • I have one chip reader and a couple of the older swipe readers. I've found that leaving the chip reader plugged into my phone actually drains the battery quicker. I mistakenly assumed that the square would be charging off my phone. Big Oops!! Now I don't leave it plugged in and all is well!
  • From the beginning we had 2 readers, a square and one from intuit.  I don't think we have used the intuit.  Then when square came out with the chip card reader, we were sent another regular square reader.  I feel that we have plenty!

    • Thanks all for replying.

I realized after reading everyone's thoughts that I don't need another chip reader-for now.

Think I will wait until whatever the next thing comes out.

I'm realizing that the chip reader prob doesn't break as easily as the non-chips.

      Happy selling!

  • I'm buying another $29 one just so my helper can take cards too.
  • I have the one that reads chips and swipes non-chip cards and I leave it plugged into my iPad throughout the show hours and usually swap them out midway through the day.  One charge might last an entire day if you don't use it much but I can't tell you from experience (before I had 2) that a dead reader is annoying and made me feel like an idiot in front of my buyers.  :)

    • Thank you....I think its a good idea, and I will be ordering another one.  I would hate to look foolish in front of a customer   LOL

  • I got a 2nd chip reader a couple months ago before my fall show circuit. I keep one charging while the other is being used...it works well.
