Art School Scholarships

A question came up at our Art Association meeting this week.  Chesapeake Bay Art Association has been giving scholarship money to high school seniors for over 50 years.  The students must be accepted into a college to study art.  We know we are the only Art group in the area that does this, but we want to know how many other groups around the country do the same things.

Our Scholarship began when founding member John B. Tenney auctioned off one of his paintings and awarded the money in a scholarship.  CBAA has continued the practice, using the money raised at the Ocean View Art Show as the main source of funding.  We have named the fund the "John B. Tenney Memorial Art Scholarship Fund".  Our Spring Show is a members only indoor show (held in May), and we award the money then.

This year we gave 5 students scholarship money, ranging from $1000 to $200. 28 Students applied, the most ever.  Since studying art is one of the requirements for applying, this means 28 new artists in the area!  The quality of the work from these students was amazing.  The judge for our members show looked at the student work and said it would have fit right in with our members work.  Actually, I think at least one of them would have taken "Best In Show"!

Again, my reason for writing this is to find out how many other organizations or shows have art scholarships.  Thanks for any information you can send me.

  • I am a member of the St. Joe Valley Watercolor Society in South Bend, IN. We have been giving a $500 scholarship to a deserving college level art student for a number of years now, since a deceased member left us a few thousand dollars for that purpose. Every year we add to that some money generated by the Leeper Park Art Fair which is run by our organization. We decided to give the scholarship to an art student at one of the local colleges for several reasons, and have been very pleased with the results.
