Any other Canadians here?

Hi all,

I am a Canuck living on an island on the west coast of Canada. (Salt Spring Island.) I have been making glass beads for over 12 years now. I sell the beads online but I also sell my jewelry at shows.

We have a market here on the island that runs every Saturday from Spring to Fall that I sell at. The quality is very good, it is juried  & you have to make everything you sell there, as well as live on the island.

There are about 150 artisans as well as some farmers, bakers etc & many of us make our entire year's income at this market.

There is a lot of info on this site & I am pleased I found it.

Anyway, Hello & I hope you are all enjoying some nice Spring weather!

  • Hello Linda,

Welcome!  I'm laughing at the Spring weather reference as I gaze out my window at the snow mounds, I think we've got some time yet before that happens.  I live in Detroit, Michigan which is very close to the Canadian border at Windsor but otherwise, nope, not Canadian.  I have traveled in Canada and love it and hope to get back there one of these days.  It sounds like you have a pretty great set up with the Saturday Market but I see other members have given you some good networking ideas and places to look so you should have an easy time of figuring it all out...good luck!

  • Hi Linda and welcome aboard :)   This site has people from all over (although at this stage I'm the only Australian!).   Sounds like you have a fabulous market there and right near home - certainly saves on the travel & accommodation costs!

  • Hello Linda and welcome.  We are glad to welcome our Canadian neighbors here.  We have even added a section in our Art Fair Calendar with Canadian shows.  We are hoping to add a section for Canadian show reviews to our Art Show Review website, as well. I do think we get several Canadians crossing into Michigan to do Art Shows here.  I know crossing the boarder at Detroit can be a bear if you are bringing goods across the boarder.  I don't know how the artists do it.  That would be a good question to post here if you are looking for that information.

I am very familiar with Ontario as I have mostly Canadian roots.  Your island sounds charming and that sounds like a wonderful place to live and visit.

Welcome and make yourself at home.

  • Hi Linda - welcome to AFI, I enjoyed a visit to Salt Spring Island a few years ago. Chi Lee is a jeweler who lives in Vancouver and has experience with shows in the US, met her at a show last fall in Seattle.  You can also go to the members page, click advanced search, and search on the country.  That will show you a list of all the other Canadians on this site.

  • HI Linda,

There are a few fellow Canucks here, but very few. I am from Brampton, Ontario just outside of Toronto. Most of my time has been focused on this market, but I am about to begin doing shows in the US. If you have any questions regarding border crossing and such please don't hesitate to let me know, I woud be more than happy to lend a hand in anyway I can.

    All the best,

    Jeremy Browne

    • Hi Jeremy, I am Canadian and would love to do some US shows but was under the impression that that was a strict no no so I would love any input and help you might have .
