I am a landscape photographer that generally just does shows regionally. Given that, many of the places with shows I'm applying to are places I have landscape images of.

I will certainly be selling those local images at the festivals if I get in to them, but does it make sense to include one or more of them as one of my jury images if it is a good image but not one I would normally count as one of my top 4?

That is, does it make sense to include an image taken at Sun Valley when applying for the Sun Valley Arts Fair, one taken in the Aspen area when applying for the Aspen festival, etc? Does that weigh in with the jurors at all?

  • For the better shows it doesn't jury well because they want a more creative presentation. For the lesser quality shows, they might go for it. I've done shows over 35 years and never tried to tailor my subject matter, but I've seen it done and those photographers usually did well.

    • Thanks Larry, that is helpful.  I'm not sure what really falls under "smaller" shows but I think all of these do (Aspen, Sun Valley, Ogden, Jackson) so I am going to give it a shot in a couple!

What do you mean when you say a more creative presentation?  Just more strictly themed?

      • Anything other than the "postcard" look.

  • I don't think it helps any, and if the image is less impressive than your regular jury shots, you're hurting yourself.
