Call for Artists, Making Money at Juried Art Fairs, Craft Shows and Festivals

I'm another newbie!  My name is Ali and I live in Shawnee, KS.  I've been painting for years in oil and acrylic.  I love painting landscapes and animals.   I have shown my work at galleries but
this Sept. is my first art fair at the Zona Rosa Art Fair.  Yikes.  I feel like I still have tons to learn and get done before then.  Well, just thought I'd stop by and say hi.  I'm sure I'll learn a lot from this site!

Hi Ai. Where is the Zona Rosa show at?
Sorry, typo. Meant to say Ali.
Hi Nels. It's it Kansas City but I'm bummed because I just found out last year it was a bust. Ugggg! :(
I see that you're from Tampa. Lucky you! I love Florida. My parent's are in Ft.Myers. I actually sent my paintings in to try and get into the show there in Feb. Have you ever been in that one? I assume it's a hard one to get into. Keeping my fingers crossed!!
Welcome. Since I noticed we're basically neighbors I thought I'd give you a heads up on some local shows for next year. In the spring the best shows are Brookside and Prairie Village(heavy competition to get in) . Lawrence has Art in the Park the same weekend as Brookside, plus the Lawrence Art Guild has a Holiday Art Fair. The Holiday Art fair has had low attendance the last couple of years. Westport has always been good for me. Columbia, MO has a show in the fall. There's a couple of smaller shows in Prairie Village that I can't recall the name of them. As you do the shows ask the artist around you and they'll be able to steer you to more shows.
Thanks so much for all of the helpful info on the shows! I knew the Brookside one always has a good crowd. Do you send your application in through Zapplication?
Brookside and Prairie Village are through zapp. The lawrence Art Guild is on their own website. Howard Allen Events do some shows across the country. Do a search for their website. They do zapp and also do it through the mail. The jury fee is cheaper if you don't use zapp for Howard. I did Howard's show in Aspen this year. And felt it was run well, it was the hot weather that hurt us.
Hello Ali and welcome. Yes, you will learn a lot here, but I bet you will learn a lot from your first show. Nothing like diving in and getting your feet wet to really learn about the business. Good luck. Let us all know how your show goes.

Jacki B
Thanks Jacki. I'm so excited for my first show!! I'll let you know how it goes and take pics too:)
Hi Ali,

I'm new here too, and a newcomer to art fairs, having done my first this past May in Lawrence. I live up in Oskaloosa, but grew up in Shawnee (SMNW class of '83...Go Cougars!).
Hi Julie,
How did the show in Lawrence go? Do you have any other shows coming up?
The Zona Rosa show went ok. I sold a painting and some prints and had a lot of people
ask about commission work. We'll see how many people follow up with the commission work:)
I sold a few small items, but only enough to cover the booth space and maybe a couple of Frappucinos at Starbucks! I had a solo exhibit at Old Jefferson Town in Oskaloosa last month, and sold a few more items (if you did the math, even though I sold a little less, I actually made more per visitor at my exhibit than AITP!) I've applied for the Holiday Art Fair, but haven't received notice yet. I'm limiting myself to smaller one day shows until I can determine whether this avenue will be a feasible one! I have a full time job, so it's not like this is my only source of income. One day, that would be nice, but the pay and the benefits at my job are nice!
Ha! I know what you mean. I may have sold enough for a couple of extra coffees:) It's hard at the beginning because of all the upfront costs. I have a full time job too but would love to paint full time one day!! Where is the Holiday Art Fair? I think it's a good idea to limit to the smaller one day shows. I bet the booth fees aren't as much either which would be a nice break!
